Saturday’s high school football roundup: Nov. 9

STATESMAN STAFFNovember 10, 2013

After a scoreless first quarter, the Grizzlies took a 21-7 lead into halftime and never looked back, earning a spot in the 3A state semifinals with a win Saturday in Spirit Lake. Timberlake gained more than 200 yards in the first half, but the Fruitland defense shut the Tigers (6-4) down and limited them to one touchdown in the half. Fruitland intercepted Timberlake QB Bryce Johnson three times. One of those interceptions was returned for a touchdown by defensive back Harvey Ware in the second quarter. Kennon Smith rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carried for Fruitland. Quarterback Jerred Seamons was 7-of-10 for 116 yards and two TDs.

Leighton Vander Esch ran for four touchdowns in Salmon River's 30-point second quarter, and that was more than enough to advance to the 1A Division II state semifinals. Vander Esch threw for 272 yards, ran for 85 and also made 13 tackles and an interception on defense. Jimmy Shepherd scored three TDs for Salmon River and caught six passes for 161 yards. Salmon River will play Dietrich in the semifinals.
