The Boise-based discount grocery chain WinCo Foods will open two new supermarkets Thursday morning in Norco, Calif., and Coeur d'Alene, it announced in a press release.

The stores are slightly smaller than traditional WinCo stores and have a different color and decor scheme. They are located at 1485 W. Appleway Ave., Coeur d'Alene and 1100 Hamner Ave., Norco, Calif.

The Coeur d'Alene store manager is Joel Clark, a 31-year WinCo employee who previously worked at a store in Yuba City, Calif. More than 30 of his staff members at the store transferred from other WinCo locations, and the Coeur d'Alene store received 7,000 applications for 156 positions, the company said.

Norco, Calif., store manager Jackie Rodriguez spent the last two of her 30-year grocery career with WinCo, most recently in Moreno Valley. Thirty-six employees transferred from other WinCo locations, and the Norco store received more than 8,000 applications for the 139 positions hired locally, the company said.

With these store openings, WinCo has nearly 15,000 employees and operates 90 stores and four distribution centers in seven states — Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, Oregon, Utah and Arizona. A fifth major distribution center is under construction in Phoenix, Ariz. The company plans to open its first two Texas stores in Fort Worth and McKinney in early 2014.
