Report: Denney decides to run for Idaho secretary of state

October 22, 2013

Former Idaho House Speaker Lawerence Denney will announce Thursday he is running for secretary of state, says Idaho Education News.

The report quotes a Facebook post from former state Rep. Janice McGeachin, R-Idaho Falls. Denney is expected to make his announcement at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Veterans Memorial by the county courthouse in Idaho Falls, according to McGeachin’s Facebook page.

Denney, currently in his ninth term in the Legislature, filed paperwork in September to raise money for a run for the office. That month, he told the Statesman's Dan Popkey that if he didn't run for secretary of state, he would retire from the Legislature.

It's not clear if incumbent Secretary of State Ben Ysursa will choose to defend his job. Just last week, Ysursa asked the Associated Press for patience and said he'd make a decision soon — adding that he'd missed his own self-imposed deadline for a decision.
