Petrino: Taylor Davis likely starter at QB for Idaho

The Idaho Vandals’ top two quarterbacks weren’t sporting shoulder pads in practice last week, but shoulder slings.

Redshirt freshman Chad Chalich, the starter in all seven games this season, left Oct. 12’s game at Arkansas State in the first quarter with a shoulder injury. Junior Josh McCain, the backup in the first six games, did not play against Arkansas State after hurting his shoulder late in Oct. 5’s game against Fresno State in Moscow.

On Monday, Idaho coach Paul Petrino said both are questionable for Saturday’s game at Ole Miss following last week’s bye.

“If we played today, they wouldn’t be playing,” Petrino said.

Petrino declined to go into details about the injuries, noting both are “day-to-day,” and he was not optimistic either would be healthy enough to be under center right away.

“It would be great to get at least one of them back as a backup,” Petrino said.

That makes senior Taylor Davis the likely starter Saturday. Davis was 14-of-39 for 199 yards, a touchdown and an interception against Arkansas State. Petrino said the bye “was good to get Taylor a lot of reps.”
