Idaho colleges roundup: Boise State men open strong at regional tennis tournament

LAS VEGAS — Four of five singles players advanced with victories, while the Broncos’ doubles teams split matches on the first day of the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships on Wednesday. Brendan McClain, Garrett Patton, Toby Mitchell and Brian Foley won their singles matches, while McClain and Patton won their doubles match. Foley and Mitchell lost their doubles match to Odon Barta and Artemiv Nikitin of Idaho. Seven Broncos move into the singles round of 64 on Thursday as No. 1 seed Andy Bettles and No. 8 Thomas Tenreiro join the action after first-round byes.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Crusaders are picked to finish fourth in the GNAC, based on the coaches’ preseason poll. Montana State Billings is the preseason favorite.

IDAHO STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Big Sky’s preseason coaches and media polls have Eastern Washington winning the league title, followed by Montana, Northern Colorado, Montana State and Idaho State.

BOISE STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING: Brittany Aoyama (swimmer) and Ciera Cortney (diver) are the Mountain West athletes of the week.
