Police: Man arrested after firing gun at ground

October 14, 2013

A Boise man is facing felony assault charges for discharging a handgun into the ground after an argument.

Police were responding to a report of shots fired outside a residence near Overland Road and Latah Street on Friday night when two people told officers they had gotten into a dispute with Byron Lee De Groot, 47. The witnesses said De Groot had first come out of the house and threatened the pair with a knife, then returned with a handgun.

The suspect pointed the gun at the two people and threatened them, before shooting into the ground, the witnesses told police. Officers found De Groot near the home and arrested him. They later retrieved a handgun from his property.

De Groot was booked into the Ada County Jail and charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He is set to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
