Boise man admits to domestic assault

October 10, 2013

Ryan Wayne Kanady

— Ryan Wayne Kanady, 33, could face up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to domestic battery with traumatic injury.

Kanady was accused of raping a woman and smothering her with a pillow after she resisted his sexual advances. The assault took place July 12 in the woman's Boise Bench home. Kanady and the victim knew each other.

The woman told police Kanady held a pillow over her head and suffocated her until she lost consciousness. When the woman regained consciousness, she locked herself in the bathroom and called 911.

Kanady was originally charged with attempted murder, rape, kidnapping, resisting or obstructing officer and malicious injury to property. He pleaded guilty to the domestic battery charge Sept. 30 in exchange for dismissal of the other charges.

Prosecutors will recommend Fourth District Ada County Judge Deborah Bail sentence Kanady to two to 10 years in prison, while retaining jurisdiction, according to court documents.

Under retained jurisdiction, Kanady could be released from prison on probation after six months if he successfully completes a prison program.

Kanady will be sentenced Nov. 18.
