Bicyclist hit on Federal Way on Monday dies in Boise hospital

October 8, 2013

The 56-year-old bicyclist struck by a sport utility vehicle on Federal Way in southeast Boise on Monday afternoon has died in a Boise hospital.

James Kelly died at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Ada County Coroner's Office.

The death was ruled an accident.

The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Monday. The SUV was turning east onto Federal Way from the Broadway Avenue offramp when it collided with the bicyclist. The name of the driver has not been released.

Both Kelly and the man driving the SUV are from Boise, police said. The bicycle was pulling a trailer typically used to carry children, but it did not have a child in it at the time of the accident, police spokeswoman Lynn Hightower said Monday. It was carrying groceries instead.

Boise police crash reconstruction experts examined the scene. Eastbound Federal Way was closed for at least two hours during the investigation.
