Service Academy Day cancelled

October 4, 2013

— The federal government shutdown has scuttled the Service Academy Day planned for Saturday at Gowen Field.

Col. Tim Marsano, spokesman for the Idaho National Guard, said he received two calls from parents of potential West Point cadets from Idaho Falls wondering whether the event was going to take place or not.

"It's not taking place," Marsano said in seeking help to publicize the cancellation. "It would be a shame if parents and their high school-age children were to travel across the state for his, only to be turned away at the Gowen Field gate."

He also noted that the Idaho Army and Air National Guard unit training assemblies scheduled for this weekend have been postponed. A total of 5,000 Guard members were scheduled to take part in their monthly drills.
