Daniel Romano performs Oct. 5 at The Crux.

  • Daniel Romano

8 p.m. Oct. 5, The Crux, 1022 W. Main St., Boise. $10 (includes copy of Calico’s EP). Also on the bill: Calico, Edmond Dantes

If you browse the inevitable arguing below one of country singer Daniel Romano’s many YouTube videos, you’ll notice a reference to Tom Petty’s recent quote about today’s country music being “like bad rock with a fiddle.” The YouTube commenter’s point: Romano ain’t modern country.

The Canadian performs “mosey croonin’ and hard-luck storytelling,” and it’s so old-school that it’s hard to tell if he’s entirely serious.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. Romano — opening at Boise band Calico’s EP release party Oct. 5 — is a cool talent.
