HIKING

First day of fall hike at Shafer Butte

The Boise National Forest will host a nature walk at Shafer Butte picnic area (Mores Mountain Trail head) on Sunday, Sept. 22 from noon to 2 p.m.

The walk will take about two hours on moderately steep terrain. The walk is free and open to the public, but there is a $5 day-use fee per vehicle at Shafer Butte. Registration is required by calling 587-7961.

Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring sunscreen, water, snacks and a warm jacket. Shafer Butte picnic area is about 3 miles past Bogus Basin ski area (turn right at the signed road) and proceed to the Shafer Butte picnic area.

CAMPING

Horsethief Reservoir closes Sept. 21

Fishing and other day-use activities are unaffected by the campground closure. Anglers can still use the boat ramp on the west side of Horsethief as well as the dock and the parking areas. Facilities will remain accessible until snowfall closes the entrance road.
