Valley County sheriff: Boise man is 'hot tub bandit,' faces charges for illegal soak, damages

September 10, 2013

It may have seemed like good clean fun, but an uninvited guest who soaked in a hot tub at a vacation home near Valley County's Horsethief Reservoir is in hot water. Sheriff's investigators say they have identified the "hot tub bandit."

Boisean Bryan M. Baines, 48, has been charged with malicious injury to property, trespassing and unlawful entry.

Valley County officials said have security video from June 6 showing a man paddling to the cabin, then trying to break in. Unable to get inside, he opted instead to soak in the hot tub.

Security camera images captured images of the man lounging in the water. He "spent a considerable amount of time" in the hot tub, officials said. The man damaged the hot tub cover, some tub jets and plumbing items, screens and rugs, but damages were less than $1,000, said Detective Sgt. T.J. Sayers.

Baines is scheduled to appear in Valley County Court at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 1.
