Idaho State routs Dixie State in season opener

STAFF AND WIRE REPORTSSeptember 8, 2013

— Justin Arias passed for 439 yards and two touchdowns to lead Idaho State to a 40-14 win over Dixie State on Saturday.

“It was awesome to start my first game, and start it with a win,” said Arias, a redshirt junior. “We did a lot of things well and we did some things poorly. You can’t turn the ball over so many times.”

In addition to touchdown passes of 8 yards to Luke Austin and 12 yards to Xavier Finney, Arias had a 19-yard touchdown run.

“Having a running game always helps,” Arias said. “For the majority of the night, they were blitzing six. They were trying to stop the run and that opens up the passing game for us.”

Idaho State (1-0) rolled up 580 total yards while limiting Division II Dixie State (0-1) to 256. Finney led Idaho State in rushing with 83 yards on 15 carries. Cam Richmond led the Bengals with nine catches for 149 yards.

The Bengals won for the first time since defeating Black Hills State 38-5 on Sept. 8, 2012 — snapping a 10-game losing streak. ISU has a shot at its first winning streak in two years when it hosts Western State Colorado University, another Division II squad, on Sept. 14 at Holt Arena.
