Volleyball primer: Timberline, Vallivue, Rocky early 5A favorites; Skyview maintains tradition in 4A SIC

Teams to watch

• Boise advanced to state last season and returns a strong core of six lettermen poised to make another run.

• Eagle missed the postseason last year for the first time in a long time, but the Mustangs are eager to fight their way back with the help of five returning starters.

• Rocky Mountain has advanced to state every year since 2008 and finished second in league last season. Three starters are back.

• Timberline established itself as one of the teams to beat after knocking off Vallivue in three games Tuesday, but lost to Rocky on Thursday. The Wolves return their entire starting lineup — all of whom are seniors — headlined by setter Sarah Barker, who accounted for 802 assists last season.

• Vallivue has three starters back from last year’s district title team, including reigning 5A SIC player of the year Maddi Osburn, a senior outside hitter.

• Bishop Kelly returns five starters — including its team leader in kills (senior outside Rachel Greiner) and digs (junior libero Jenna Miranda) — from last year’s state-qualifying team.

• Caldwell lost all but three players from last season, but is proving to be scrappy on defense in combination with a pair of hard-hitting outsides.

• Kuna coach Deb Bradburn hopes to have a young but talented squad back in the postseason mix with the guidance of three returning starters.

• Middleton returns just two starters, but the Vikings have a strong group of sophomores ready to step into starting roles.

• Skyview has won seven of the past nine district titles, and welcomes back seven seniors who contributed to last season’s third-place finish at state.
