BOISE — The Bronco women were picked second, and the men tied for third, in the Mountain West preseason coaches polls released Thursday. New Mexico was picked first in both polls and took all but one first-place vote in each. The BSU women were picked ahead of Colorado State, which earned a No. 1 vote. Air Force received the other top men’s selection; BSU and CSU are tied for third.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO TRACK AND FIELD: The Coyotes signed eight women for the 2013-14 season, including two Idaho state champions — 5A 1,600- and 3,200-meter champ Lila Klopfenstein (Meridian High), and 1A shot put and discus winner Jessica Bates (Butte County). Also joining the squad are freshmen McKenzie Bell, Hailey Good (Mountain View), Johanna Mori (Rimrock) and Briana Pitts (Vallivue); and transfers Jazmine Gordillo and Caroline Ratliff from Treasure Valley Community College.

C OF I VOLLEYBALL: No. 16 Westmont rallied from an early one-set deficit to defeat the No. 6 Coyotes 16-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-14 in the opening game of the Red Lion Summer Slam in La Mirada, Calif. The Coyotes later lost to No. 4 Biola in four sets to drop to 0-2 on the season.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE VOLLEYBALL: The Crusaders are predicted to finish seventh in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, based on a preseason vote of league coaches. Defending champion Western Washington is favored to repeat.
