MOSCOW — Idaho quarterback Chad Chalich went off against the Vandal defense during the team’s second fall scrimmage morning in Moscow.

The redshirt freshman from Coeur d’Alene High was 19-of-20 passing for 414 yards, and he added 27 yards on the ground as the offensive units combined for 911 yards and 12 touchdowns on the day.

“I thought the offense had a real good day,” head coach Paul Petrino said. “I have to watch it on tape but Chad hit a lot of big plays. You saw the little guy, No. 4 (Richard Montgomery) making all kinds of plays all over the field. Deon (Watson) made some big plays. I thought the O-line played a lot better. … Sometimes that means that maybe the defense didn’t.”

Dezmon Epps had six catches for 111 yards, and Jerrel Brown led the rushing attack with eight carries for 46 yards. Ryan Edwards paced the defense with two of its five sacks.

“We have to run the ball better and we have to tackle better,” Petrino said. “We just have to keep grinding.”

Idaho opens the season at North Texas on Aug. 31. The Vandals’ home opener is Sept. 14 against Northern Illinois.
