Adult Education Class: Hypertufa Trough Workshop: 10 a.m. Aug. 17 (part 1) and 6 p.m. Aug. 21 (part 2) at Idaho Botanical Garden, 2355 N. Penitentiary Road, Boise. Make hypertufa troughs to use as planters for shallow-rooted outdoor plants like alpines, thymes and succulents. $35 members, $40 nonmembers. Tasty Tomato Tunes: 6 to 8 p.m. at Edwards Greenhouse, 4106 Sand Creek St., Boise. Tomato tasting party with music by Doug Brown and food and beverages to purchase from Archie's Food Truck. Also, story time for the children by Kathleen Sanders. Free. 342-7548.

AUG. 24

Bug Day: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Idaho Botanical Garden, 2355 N. Penitentiary Road, Boise. Release ladybugs, participate in Insect Olympics, earn a "Certificate in Bugology" and catch live bugs. $8 general, $4 children 5-12 and members, free for ages 4 and younger. 343-8649, idahobotanicalgarden.org.

SEPT. 7

Vegetable Garden Tour: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Castle Hills Church of the Nazarene, 5707 Castle Drive, Boise (starting point). Introduces participants to different methods for growing vegetables in a variety of settings, from an urban farm to private homes. Maps given at first stop. All locations are within five miles of the church. $10 for Idaho Botanical Garden members, $15 nonmembers.

Idaho Water Garden and Koi Society's Koi and Goldfish Show: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Idaho Botanical Garden, 2355 N. Penitentiary Road, Boise. Koi competition, trade show, bonsai displays, Japanese drumming performance, more. Free. 343-8649, idahobotanicalgarden.org.

SEPT. 18

The Care and Feeding of Carnivorous Plants: 6:30 p.m. at Idaho Botanical Garden, 2355 N. Penitentiary Road, Boise. Meet with Dave Nelson, owner of the carnivorous plant collection loaned to the garden, for a talk that addresses the different types and the methods they utilize to capture and kill insects and how to grow them here in the Treasure Valley. $10 members, $15 nonmembers. Concrete Leaf Workshop: 9 a.m. Sept. 21 (part 1) and 6 p.m. Sept. 26 (part 2) at Idaho Botanical Garden, 2355 N. Penitentiary Road, Boise. Create a garden ornament using concrete and a large leaf.
