Time Magazine has picked up on BIs July 23-29 story, The Rise of the WinCo Empire. Time business reporter Brad Tuttle noted veteran retail analyst Burt Flickingers comments to Statesman reporter Audrey Dutton about the possible threat WinCo poses to Wal-Mart in the discount-grocery sector.
Retail analysts say that the worlds biggest retailer has reason to fear a small grocery chain thats based in Idaho and boasts a business model that allows it to undercut Wal-Mart on prices, Tuttle wrote.
Another Statesman reporter had his 15 minutes of fame (OK, a few minutes less than that) the day the FBI rescued Hannah Anderson and shot and killed her abductor, James DiMaggio. John Sowell appeared Saturday night, Aug. 10, on Fox News Geraldo at Large show.
That wasnt a business story, but I got involved because I was the Statesmans assigned editor on call that weekend a duty I share in rotation with other editors. So I stayed on top of developments and helped organize coverage. Sowell, who grew up in Emmett, joined the Statesman two months ago. We sent him to Cascade for the story. Photographers Joe Jaszewski and Darin Oswald went too and took great pictures. In Boise, Katie Terhune churned out fast, newsy tweets while reporting for this and other stories. Space doesnt permit mentioning everyone who pitched in. It was a dramatic weekend.
