Rescued Hannah Anderson gets her cat back

Idaho StatesmanAugust 12, 2013

— Hannah Anderson has been reunited with her cat.

The 16-year-old brought her gray cat with her to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness after being kidnapped from her Southern California home by James Lee DiMaggio.

Former Gem County Sheriff Mark John, who along with his wife Christa and ranchers Mike and Mary Young, encountered Hanna and DiMaggio in the wilderness near Morehead Lake on Wednesday, thought it was strange to see a house cat in the rugged Idaho backwoods east of Cascade.

Hannah was holding the cat when the foursome encountered her.

"The only reason you bring a cat out there is to attract a mountain lion or a bear," John said.

The cat's presence could have made the feline as well as DiMaggio and Hannah prey for any of a number of wild animals found in central Idaho.

The cat, whose name wasn't immediately available this morning, was brought to Hannah following her rescue Saturday.

Dimaggio was killed Saturday after firing at least one shot at FBI agents, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said today.
