Michael Quist, a University of Idaho associate professor of fish and wildlife sciences, has won a national award recognizing his research.
The U.S. Department of the Interiors Cooperative Research Units program named Quist the winner of its Excellence in Science Award for fiscal year 2012. Quist is an assistant leader of the Idaho Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.
A memorandum announcing the award noted Quists research and publishing productivity. It also recognized his role as an excellent mentor to his graduate students and the importance of his work in influencing government agencies fish-management decisions.
Quists research focuses primarily on the population ecology of various fish species, which is important for agencies whose roles include setting fishing regulations and managing fish habitats. Through the Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Quist works with state, tribal and federal agencies to provide support and solve problems relating to fish management.
The majority of Quists research takes place in Idaho. For example, he is working with students to study kokanee in Lake Pend Oreille, supported by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and westslope cutthroat trout in Lake Coeur dAlene, supported by the Coeur dAlene Tribe.
Almost everything Im doing is being conducted in Idaho or has application to natural resources in this state, he said.
In addition to preparing his students many of whom plan to work at fish and wildlife agencies for careers, Quists goal is producing information that is valuable for agencies to make science-based management decisions.
The Idaho Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit is housed in the UI College of Natural Resources Department of Fish and Wildlife Sciences and is a partnership of the university, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Charles Crafts, a Boise attorney, was a finalist and the U.S. Department of Energy, Idaho Operations, was a semi-finalist for the Freedom Award presented by the U.S. secretary of defense to employers for support of their National Guard and Reserve employees.
The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Idaho Committee also honored 11 other Idaho employers representing the public and private sector at Gowen Field in Boise: Interstate Electric Supply, Citi Cards, Saint Alphonsus, Boise Police Department, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, Boise School District, city of Boise, Homedale School District, Micron, CM Co., and Allied Barton.
The Freedom Award is the highest civilian award presented by the secretary of defense. This year, 25 Idaho employers were nominated. Thirteen, mainly in Southwest Idaho, were recognized at a banquet at Gowen Field in Boise.
Bill Flory of Winchester was reappointed to the Idaho Wheat Commission by Gov. Butch Otter to serve a five-year term from District 2 Nez Perce, Clearwater, Idaho, Lewis, Boise, Payette, Valley and Washington counties.
Flory is a graduate of the University of Idaho with a degree in business/finance. He has operated a diversified grain farm near Winchester since 1976 and has been involved in local, state and national agricultural activities for more than 35 years.
He is an executive board member of the Wheat Marketing Center in Portland. He oversees the Idaho Wheat Commission finances and is a member of the Bennett Farm Foundation and the Lewiston Roundup board.
Steve Lively has been named executive sous chef at the Boise Centre.
Lively is a graduate of the Boise State University School of Culinary Arts. His culinary career spans 27 years.
Lively began his career as a prep cook with Marriott, advancing to catering chef. He spent 10 years as an owner and executive chef of A Lively Chef Catering Co. In 2010 he became executive chef of The Kitchen in Eagle. In 2011 he moved to Salmon Creek Retirement Center as executive chef, managing a 10-person kitchen staff.
Lively also supervised catering operations for Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center through Thomas Management Co. He worked with the Boise Centre maintaining Idaho food safety practices and assisting in training to maintain state standards and standards established by Boise Centre management. He also assisted in inventory management, food preparation and elegant plating.
Boise native Brooke Zrno Grisham has been named chief executive officer in charge of the Nautilus Group of New York Life. In this role, Grisham is responsible for a team of industry professionals based in Dallas providing support in business and estate planning for a group of New York Life agents. She reports to Senior Vice President Gerard Rocchi.
Grisham joined New York Life in 1999 as a senior associate in the Nautilus Group and has held positions of increasing responsibility, most recently as chief operating officer, where she was responsible for case development, information technology, compliance and administrative functions. She was named a vice president in 2011.
Before joining New York Life, Grisham worked as a corporate sales and marketing trainer for Mary Kay Inc.
Warren East has been appointed to the board of directors of Micron Technology Inc. in Boise.
East served as CEO of ARM Holdings PLC from October 2001 to July 2013. He serves as director of De La Rule PLC. He joined ARM in 1994 and later became vice president of business operations. Within three years, he was appointed to the board as chief operating officer. Before ARM, East was with Texas Instruments.
East is a chartered engineer, a distinguished fellow of the British Computer Society, a fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a companion of the Chartered Management Institute. He earned bachelors and masters degrees in engineering science from Oxford University, and an MBA and honorary doctorate from Cranfield University.
The Idaho Foodbank has received a $40,200 grant for operating support from the HP Corporate Fund, a corporate-advised fund of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The grant was made on behalf of 2012-2013 Enhanced Early Retirement retirees in the Boise area.
HPs donation will support the Foodbanks statewide operations and programs. These include Mobile Pantry, the Backpack Weekend food program for children at risk of hunger, Cooking Matters classes, School Pantry and the Picnic in the Park summer lunch program. The grant also will support the operations of the Foodbanks three warehouses in Boise, Pocatello and Lewiston.
This grant will provide the equivalent of 120,600 meals to families that struggle to put food on the table, says Karen Vauk, the Foodbanks president and CEO.
Boises The Human Bean coffee shop chain raised $1,200 for the Jayden DeLuca Foundation.
The foundation was created to honor Jayden Riley DeLuca, who died at age 2 after undergoing multiple major open heart surgeries and clinical procedures because of her congenital heart condition. Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defects in America and the leading cause of birth-defect related deaths in the country. Since its creation, the foundation has raised more than $300,000 for pediatric cardiac disease support and research.
