Boisean Michael Roberts feels lucky to own and operate his own business with his wife, Robbin.

The pair, both in their 40s, have an unusual pet-related business — they bought into the franchise Poop911. They scoop dog poop for a living, primarily from the backyards of homes. Many of their customers have two or more dogs.

“I enjoy it,” says Michael Roberts, who had worked for a tire company until the recession hit. “I’m outside, I like the interaction with the dogs.”

He says it cost about $15,000 to launch the business, including $10,000 for a fuel-efficient car and $2,000 for the Poop911 advertising wrap on the vehicle.

They’ve been in business since 2009, and now they are both working at it full time.

“The joke is nonstop,” Michael Roberts says of the public’s reaction to “poop.” “It’s always a chuckle or two.”
