Open houses scheduled for Gowen Road, Broadway I-84 interchange replacement projects

July 25, 2013

— The Idaho Department of Transportation will hold two open houses to share information on a pair of upcoming projects to improve the Broadway Avenue and Gowen Road interchanges on Interstate 84.

The first open house will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Boise Outlet Mall, 6806 S. Eisenman Road. It will be held to talk about replacement of the Gowen Road interchange and widening of I-84 between Broadway and Gowen Road. The improvements are meant to reduce congestion and improve safety.

The $31 million project will add a third freeway lane in each direction on the freeway. It will also provide two left-turn lanes from Gowen Road onto I-84 heading west toward Meridian. It will also provide two through lanes in each direction on Gowen Road and longer and wider onramps and exits leading to and from the freeway.

The Broadway open house will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 7 in the Gateway Shopping Center near Shopko, at 2781 Broadway Ave.

The $53 million project will also add a third lane on the freeway, provide two lanes in each direction on Broadway and add longer and wider onramps and exits. The railroad bridges east of the Broadway interchange will also be replaced.

Curbs, gutters, sidewalks and bicycle lanes will be added on both Broadway and Gowen Road as part of the two projects.

Both interchanges were built in 1969, when 5,650 vehicles per day traveled on the freeway near Gowen Road and 8,850 near Broadway. Today, the Gowen portion handles about 44,500 vehicles per day, while Broadway handles 70,000 vehicles on the freeway and along the interchange.

Both projects are being paid for through savings from previous highway projects.

Additional information on both projects, along with a fact sheet and an email link to submit written comments, are available online. The Gowen Road project is at http://bit.ly/1bSjDBz, while the Broadway project is at http://bit.ly/12OGR3d.

The Orchard and Vista interchanges were replaced in 2010, while the freeway was widened between Orchard and Gowen Road the following year.
