Idaho Statesman among recipients of 2013 Mayor's Awards for Excellence in Art & History

July 18, 2013

Boise Mayor David Bieter announced the recipients of the 2013 Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in Art & History, biennial awards that pay tribute to the achievements of local individuals, organizations and businesses in the city and their promotion of arts and culture.

This year's awards included three one-time Boise 150 awards in the city's three themes for sesquicentennial events.

The Idaho Statesman won in the Enterprise category. Phil Kushlan won in the Community category. Don Belts and Eric Jensen won in the Environment category.

Adam Park, spokesman for the mayor's office, said the Statesman was recognized for Anna Webb's 150 Boise icons series and the Statesman staff's series of "building block" stories on historic Boise neighborhoods, including River Street, Fort Boise, South Boise, the Bench and others.

"The Idaho Statesman helped to add a sense of celebration to the city's sesquicentennial," said Park.

The award also recognizes the Statesman as a long-time business with deep roots in the city. The Statesman marks its 150th anniversary in 2014.

“Boise’s livability depends on its rich arts and cultural enterprises. This type of environment doesn’t just happen – it takes tremendous talent and efforts by dedicated individuals and groups to create the many amenities our city enjoys,” Mayor Bieter said. Award recipients must have demonstrated distinguished service, creative accomplishment, and a record of performance, publication, presentation, or research that enhances the artistic, historic, and broader cultural life of Boise. The awards began in 1986 to honor the arts, since which time more than 90 people and organizations have been recognized.
