Sawtooth Society executive director on White Cloud monument proposal

Gary O'Malley, executive director of the Sawtooth Society, visited the Idaho Statesman Editorial Board today (July 9) to make Idahoans aware of concerns regarding a possible change in status from the present Sawtooth National Recreation Area to Sawtooth National Monument. Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, has long advocated this position but his legislation has stalled at various points over the years. There is a possibility that President Barack Obama could declare SNRA in the White Cloud area -- and possible nearby other lands -- a national monument. Concerned members of Sawtooth Society and other groups want to make sure this transition is transparent and the public gets a chance to weigh in before such a profound status change takes place.

Idaho Statesman is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
