Idaho colleges: Two Vandals honored as WAC student-athletes of the year

DENVER - Men's basketball player Kyle Barone and distance runner Hannah Kiser are winners of the Joe Kearney Award, given annually to the top male and female student-athletes in the WAC. Barone, a senior who graduated in December, was the WAC Player of the Year last season. Kiser, a junior and the first Idaho woman to win the award, swept the WAC Athlete of the Year honors in cross country and indoor and outdoor track.

Barone tweeted Friday that he will play on the Denver Nuggets' summer league team.

BOISE STATE SOFTBALL: Hailey Torrez has signed with the Broncos after two seasons as a shortstop and catcher at Central Arizona Community College.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE BASEBALL: Right-handed pitcher Nathan Emerson and first baseman/pitcher Mike Metzger, both from Columbia High, have signed to play for the Crusaders starting this fall.

LEWIS-CLARK STATE BASEBALL: Lewis-Clark State pitcher Sal Arena pleaded guilty to assault for his part in a scuffle with a teammate in early March, according to court documents. Lewiston Police say pitcher Cordell Greene said he was leaving the locker room March 8 when Arena "blindsided" him and punched him three to four times with a closed fist. Teammates broke up the scuffle. Arena, a junior, didn't appear in 10 consecutive games following the fight, then made regular appearances out of the bullpen the rest of the season. He must pay $624.10, but won't serve any jail time.
