When the Idaho Statesman's readers survey debuted in 1988, it was named the Best of Boise. In those early years, we discovered things about ourselves that would raise eyebrows nowadays. Best Fries? McDonald's. Best Video Store? Blockbuster. (What IS this "video store" thingy you speak of?)
But as the City of Trees grew, so did the poll. The name was changed to reflect our expanding population base. Our tastes widened, too. In 2013, we have categories like Best Sushi (in Idaho?). This year, there's even Best Brewery, reflecting our explosive craft beer market.
Readers make it happen. Voting online, they choose the top dog in each category - the Best of Treasure Valley. Other top finishers are listed as runners-up.
It's an exciting process, even if counting all those votes gets a little tiring. Yo, cut us some slack. In canine years, Best of Treasure Valley is gettin' up there - 182 years old! - and still pulling hard on the leash.
