Best Asian restaurant

Consistent service and a familiar menu have kept Golden Star a repeat favorite for Treasure Valley diners.

Founded by four Chinese immigrants - Larry and Shirley Louie and Susie and Shak Lee - the restaurant is two years shy of marking a half-century on the Boise Bench. Shak Lee has since passed away, but the other three remain involved.

"When we first came, (Orchard) from Franklin on was just a dirt road," Larry said.

With so much history, the restaurant has earned an established fan base that it pleases with a mix of regular meals and rotating house specials. A recent day featured chow mein with Mandarin chicken and an egg roll.

Larry Louie believes Golden Star's success is due to three key priorities: great ingredients, reasonable prices and a focus on customer service.

"And that makes people happy," he said. "I think that's most important to bring them back."
