The captain of the American cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009 will speak at the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce's annual gala dinner Oct. 8 at the Boise Centre.

The chamber announced Wednesday that Capt. Richard Phillips will headline the gala. Phillips is portrayed by Tom Hanks in a film set for release in October about the hijacking of the MV Maersk Alabama. It was the first American cargo ship hijacking since the 1800s. Phillips was taken hostage by the pirates and hailed as a hero for volunteering his life in exchange for his crew's safety.

Phillips will talk about leadership, survival, heroism and the impact that cargo-ship piracy has on international trade, the chamber said.
