Former Rocky Mountain outfielder signs with Padres

Mason Smith, who was drafted 118th overall (fourth round) last week, signed for approximately $433,000, according to his father, Tim.

Mason Smith flew to Peoria, Ariz., on Monday and practiced with the Padres' Rookie League team in Peoria on Tuesday. Peoria's first game is June 20 against the Mariners.

"They said they're going to let him grow, not rush him - if they feel he's good and ready to move up, they'll do it,'' Tim Smith said.

The Padres have a short-season Single-A team in Eugene, which is in the Northwest League with Boise.

Smith hit .427 in his three seasons at Rocky Mountain.
