Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxxs nomination as U.S. transportation secretary could move forward next week.
The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Transportation and Science will begin work Monday on the nomination, said U.S. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the ranking Republican on the commiteee.
At a confirmation hearing last month, both Democrats and Republicans praised Foxx.
Foxx would take over an agency that faces huge budget challenges, including mandatory spending cuts known as sequestration, as well as a diminishing fund to construct and maintain the countrys highways and transit systems.
Foxx isnt expected to encounter any significant opposition past nominees for DOT have been confirmed unanimously.
Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., told McClatchy in New York on Monday that though they had policy differences, he foresaw a smooth confirmation for the Charlotte mayor.
