Idaho colleges: Boise State, Idaho, Idaho State athletes qualify for track nationals


Three Broncos earned national qualifying spots Saturday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas - junior Emma Bates (5,000, a school-record 16:04.03), junior Matt Post (hammer, 208-11) and junior Daveon Collins (200, 20.87). Earlier in the meet, Bates qualified for nationals in the 10,000. Sophomore Marisa VanderMalle, who qualified late Friday in the steeplechase, will join Saturday's qualifiers at the national championships June 5-8 in

Eugene, Ore. VanderMalle ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:01.12 to shatter her school record by 24 seconds. Forty athletes from Boise State, Idaho and Idaho State competed in the event, hoping for a spot at the NCAA Championships. Idaho State senior Mike Arnold (pole vault, 17-8 1/2) qualified Saturday, while Idaho will be represented at nationals by seniors Liga Velvere (400 hurdles, 58.40), Jeremy Klas (pole vault, 17-6 1/2) and Ugis Svazs (javelin, 237-0).
