Driver charged for hitting cyclist, fleeing

May 21, 2013

— A Boise man who allegedly struck a cyclist with his SUV and drove away Monday night has been arrested.

Police said that Stoney Lynn Shafer Jr., 27, hit the woman in the driveway of a grocery store. He drove away immediately, said witnesses who were able to note Shafer’s license plate.

The cyclist, a Boise woman in her early 20s, was not seriously injured, police said. She was treated at the scene by Ada County Paramedics.

Witnesses to the collision were able to give police a description of the SUV and its license plate number. Officers discovered that it was registered to Shafer, and went to his house.

Police found Shafer inside the house, hiding in a bedroom closet. He was arrested and booked into the Ada County Jail.

Shafer is charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident with injury and a misdemeanor count of driving without privileges.
