Fruitland got off to a strong start in its quest to win a third straight championship by beating Bear Lake 12-0 in five innings. The Grizzlies play Priest River - a 17-1 winner over South Fremont - in a 7 p.m. semifinal Friday. Fellow District Three qualifier Payette dropped from ttitle contention after a 7-0 loss to Snake River.


Grangeville took down defending champion Malad 2-1 to set up a semifinal with Nampa Christian, an 11-4 winner over Firth. Melba fell 8-6 to St. Maries. New Plymouth, last year's state runner-up and the reigning District Three champ, routed Wendell 24-7 in five innings. The Pilgrims play Grangeville in a 7 p.m. semifinal.
