Eleven community health centers in Idaho will be eligible to receive an estimated $1.35 million to help uninsured Idahoans enroll in health insurance plans.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced the funds, which are part of the Affordable Care Act, on Thursday. The agency is making about $150 million available to community health centers nationwide, to offer in-person enrollment assistance to uninsured people.
"Health centers have extensive experience providing eligibility assistance to patients, are providing care to 130,399 individuals in Idaho communities and are well-positioned to support enrollment efforts," said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
The centers can hire employees, train existing staff and do outreach and education with the funds. They will be responsible for helping consumers understand their options in an insurance marketplace that is changing drastically. Health insurance exchanges are expected to start enrolling people in plans this fall, and some consumers will be eligible for tax credits to buy those plans. The centers also will educate consumers on changes to Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program.
The funds are separate from $54 million in grants on the table for health insurance exchange navigators insurance benefits specialists who will be a required part of health insurance exchanges.
