Former Olympic skier to coach Sun Valley team

Boise native Dane Spencer, a 1996 Boise High graduate and a 2002 Olympian, will coach the Alpine Gold Team for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. Spencer, 36, was named to U.S. Ski Team in 1996 at the age of 18 and made his World Cup debut that season. He finished 16th in the men's giant slalom at the Salt Lake Olympics, made 66 World Cup starts with 13 top-20 finishes and competed in five World Championships, skiing to seventh in giant slalom in 2005. Spencer retired from racing in 2010 and joined the U.S. Ski Team as a coach, spending two seasons as an assistant with the men's World Cup technical team and one with the speed team.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS: Northwest Nazarene head cross country and track and field coach John Spatz has been inducted into the Community Colleges of Spokane Hall of Fame. He was a record-setting decathlete at CCS in the 1980s. ... Boise doctor John Boyajian will be inducted into the Indiana Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday. Boyajian graduated from an Indiana high school and became an All-Big Ten quarterback at Wisconsin.
