Ignitor leader stays ahead at Firebird Raceway

Dan Horan of Sylmar, Calif., maintained the top spot in AA/Funny Car qualifying at the 43rd annual NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor at Firebird Raceway on Saturday.

Horan posted a quicker performance during the second session with a 5.83 elapsed time at 246.30 miles per hour.

Newcomer Robert Overholser of Clovis, Calif., was second at 5.86-240.38.

Two-time NHRA world champion Jason Rupert did not qualify, finishing ninth with an all-new motor combination at 6.26-233.82.

Top Sportsman racer Jim Daniels from Buckley, Wash., was involved in a mid-track qualifying crash with his '63 Corvette. Daniels walked away from the 150 mph accident unhurt after hitting the wall at the quarter-mile mark.

NHRA Sportsman qualifying kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by the AA/Funny Car qualifying sessions at 1 p.m.

Adult pit-side admission is $22, while children 15 and younger are admitted free.
