Whitney Elementary School faculty, staff, and students ended their day Thursday with a serenade of "Proud to be an American" to custodian Abdinasir Mohamud, 30, who passed a citizenship test on April 15 to become a United States citizen.
Abdinasir has been in the US for 7 years, and worked at Whitney for two. He is a Somalian refugee, and borrowed books from the school library to study for his test.
He said he thinks the United States is a "very amazing country" and appreciates how peaceful and civilized the people are here.
"It's very amazing because I was a refugee for a long time...I am proud and thankful that the U.S. gave me an opportunity," he said.
