For two innings, the Boise High defense kept the Eagle bats at bay.
But by the start of the third inning, there was no keeping a lid on the Mustangs' red-hot hitters any longer.
With the help of a three-run third and a five-run fifth, the Eagle softball team turned a two-run deficit into a 9-5 victory in a showdown of the 5A Southern Idaho Conference's top two teams Tuesday at Mountain Cove Softball Field.
The victory moves the Mustangs (14-0, 10-0 5A SIC) three games ahead of the Braves (11-3, 7-3) with eight games remaining in the regular season.
Boise put Eagle's unbeaten streak to the test early.
The Braves scored two runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI triple from Erica Dick, followed by an RBI double from Bailey Carson.
The Mustangs planned to intentionally walk Dick - a senior pitcher/shortstop who has committed to Northern Colorado - but she got her bat on a 3-0 pitch to start the scoring.
"We respect Erica Dick. I think the whole Valley does," Eagle coach Doug Corta said. "She's just a great athlete and she's definitely a threat."
Dick finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, home run and two RBIs, but also was saddled with the loss in the circle. Dick's solo home run in the seventh sailed over the center-field fence and likely would have landed on the other side of Mountain Cove Road had it not hit the top of a pine tree.
Unfortunately for the Braves, the Mustangs had plenty of their own power at the plate.
Senior shortstop MacKenzi Corta and freshman catcher Chloe Asroui each hit home runs, and freshman pitcher Bradie Fillmore added a two-run triple to more than make up for the loss of senior Sara Hingsberger's bat. The Braves intentionally walked Hingsberger - a Weber State signee - in all four of her plate appearances.
"We've never had this strong of a lineup before," four-year letterman Corta said. "We are so confident that anybody that's up to bat, we know they are capable of getting a strong hit and doing their job. It's kind of nice, you don't have to stress about it."
