Reynaldo Sanchez will spend at least the next 13.5 years in prison for killing his 3-month-old son Adrien in December 2011.
Fourth District Judge Timothy Hansen gave the 20-year-old Sanchez a life sentence Tuesday for the crime of first degree murder, where Sanchez can ask for parole after serving 15 years. (Sanchez, who has been in jail since late 2011, gets credit for time served).
Sanchez pleaded guilty January to first degree murder as part of a plea agreement with Ada County prosecutors.
Sanchez told the boys mother and his family Tuesday he was sorry for what happened and said he was taking responsibility for his actions.
There isnt a day that goes by where I dont mourn my dead boy, Sanchez said Tuesday. Not a day goes by where I dont think about Adrien.
Reynaldo "Lucas" Sanchez has been in the Ada County Jail shortly after paramedics found the boy critically injured at a southeast Boise home the morning of Dec. 16, 2011.
Ada County Coroners reports show that three-month-old Adrien Sanchez died from blunt force trauma injuries to the head and the manner of the infants death was a homicide. The boy also had bruising on the legs, arm, and forehead, and retinal hemorrhages in the eyes, according to court testimony.
Paramedics were sent to the home after a caller said a baby had fallen out of an infant bouncy seat and was hurt.
Sheriffs officials say the infant was in Sanchezs care at the time of the 911 call. Detectives say Sanchez called two other people who live at the home and told them the baby was hurt after falling out of the baby seat.
Those people came back to the house, saw the babys injuries, and immediately called 911, according to reports.
Paramedics first took the baby to St. Lukes Hospital in Meridian for treatment of significant injuries to his head and body, before he was moved to St. Lukes in Boise. The child died several hours later, according to reports.
Detectives determined the injuries were not consistent with a fall from a bouncy seat, but had, in fact, been caused by the childs father, according to sheriffs reports.
Prosecutors pointed out Tuesday Sanchez changed his story at least three times about what happened to Adrien and that none of the explanations fully explain the boys injuries. Sanchez first told detectives Adrien fell out of the bouncy seat. The second version was that Sanchez dropped the boy while giving him a bath. The third version Sanchez told detectives was that he accidentally stepped on the boys head that day.
Prosecutors also say Sanchez spent almost an hour re-arranging the inside of the house to support the bouncy seat story before telling anyone what happened, including giving Adrien a bath and setting him next to a space heater to warm the baby up after he was fatally injured.
Sanchez remained stoic throughout most of Tuesdays sentencing hearing but was not able to look when autopsy photos of Adrien were shown on a video screen.
The babys mother told Hansen she felt Sanchez loved his son but wanted to know exactly what happened when Adrien died.
My life has crumbled around me ... I just wish he would tell me the truth, said Marissa Galaviz. I dont think Ill be able to heal unless he does.
