Dangerous encounters: So far in 2013, Idaho has seen four car-train collisions, with one fatality. The Idaho State Police report two other cases of trespassing on railroad property or tracks, which led to another death.
Trains and automobiles: During Friday's Officer on a Train event, one officer will ride as a spotter in a train's lead locomotive, watching traffic at rail intersections. If the spotter sees a violation, the officer radios a nearby patrol officer to stop the motorist and explain the danger or issue a citation.
'Adopt a Crossing': In addition to the officers on a train, state and local law enforcement officers in western Idaho will pick rail crossings on which to focus enforcement efforts for the day.
On track: The Officer on a Train and crossing-enforcement programs have been around since 1990.
