Along with the big white horse that prances over the Pioneer Building at Main and 6th and the washer woman who toils over Cucina di Paolo, the giant diamond ring atop Artsmith Jewelers on Vista is one of the things that makes the Boise skyline unlike any other.
Original shop owner Art Smith had the ring made when the shop opened in 1970, said current owner Rick Harvey.
Harvey, a third-generation Idahoan, grew up on the Boise Bench. He started working at Artsmith as an apprentice in 1971.
"You say Artsmith, people say, 'Oh, that's the one with the ring on top,'" said Harvey.
A few years ago, when the ring was looking a little beat-up, a longtime customer Jim Cloninger rebuilt it. He charged only for materials.
The Artsmith ring is a Tiffany-style engagement setting.
"But we haven't found anybody with a finger that fits it," said Harvey.
