Boise State head mens and womens track and field coach J.W. Hardy has been relieved of his duties as head coach, according to a press release sent out by Boise State on Thursday afternoon.
Assistant coach Jeff Petersmeyer was named interim head coach of the two teams. Boise State will conduct a national search.
Hardy was hired in 2009. The Broncos are in the middle of their outdoor season. They are scheduled to compete in the Idaho Cup at Dona Larsen Park on Friday and Saturday.
No explanation for Hardy's dismissal was given in the release. Hardy said he will be paid through the end of his contract, which runs through the end of June.
I want to make it be known that I wasnt fired, my contract wont be renewed, Hardy said by phone Thursday night. Boise State is choosing to move in another direction right now.
Hardy is the second head coach athletic director Mark Coyle has fired since taking over for Gene Bleymaier in January of 2012. Coyle opted not to renew the contract of womens soccer coach Steve Lucas last November.
Theyre entitled to not renew my contract, Hardy said. They want to get a head start on finding someone else. Well have to agree to disagree.
