The West Boise Wastewater Treatment Plant property along Joplin Road carries an open land zoning designation, which doesnt support industrial uses, said Scott Spjute, Boises zoning administrator.
That means the Public Works Department has to get special permission through the citys planning and zoning process for changes to the plants footprint.
On Monday, the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended allowing the city to change the zoning designation to general industrial. If the City Council approves the measure, changes to the plant wouldnt require special permission, Spjute said.
The city has no plans to build new facilities on the land or expand the existing ones, he said.
The commission also recommended annexing a parcel next to the treatment plant and giving it an industrial designation. Boise has owned the land for years, but it was not within city limits.
