Police charged Anthony R. Schmidt, 25, of Boise with felony grand theft and obstructing officers, a misdemeanor.
Patrol officers spotted Schmidt driving what the officer recognized as a stolen Oldsmobile sedan at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Schmidt pulled into the parking lot of a convenience store at Nez Perce and S. Roosevelt Streets. The officers followed. Schmidt ignored them when they told him to stop. He walked into the store.
The officers recognized Schmidt. Police spokeswoman Lynn Hightower said Schmidt has a criminal history that includes drug and weapons violations.
The officers evacuated the store for the safety of shoppers and employees. Schmidt refused to come out.
Because of their knowledge of Schmidt's record, officials decided to call out the Special Operations Unit/SWAT) team.
After repeated attempts to get Schmidt to leave the store, police used pepper spray. Schmidt surrendered a short time later.
Police arrested him on an outstanding warrant at about 6 p.m.
