A construction crew broke a water service line in Downtown Boise Tuesday, flooding Bannock Street and shutting off water to the Post Office.

Water service is expected to be restored by Wednesday morning, said Mark Snider, spokesman for United Water Idaho. Meanwhile, motorists should avoid Bannock between 8th Street and Capitol Boulevard.

The mishap affected only the post office and did not break a water main as first feared, Snider said.

"That tends to create bigger problems," Snider said.

Police closed Bannock between 8th and Capitol about 3:30 p.m.
