Dezmyn Trent makes verbal commitment

One of the top scorers in Washington state plans to join an already potent Boise State men's basketball lineup.

Tacoma (Wash.) Foss High star Dezmyn Trent will sign with the Broncos next month after he set a school record for points in a single season, he announced Tuesday.

"He can score in a lot of ways - he can shoot, he can post up and he can get to the (free-throw) line,'' Foss coach Mike Cocke' said.

Trent (6-foot-3, 205 pounds) scored 26.9 points per game this season as a senior and was the Tacoma News Tribune's player of the year, awarded the honor over players who have committed to Cal, Colorado and Gonzaga.

The third commitment set to join Boise State next season, Trent said he will visit Boise State this weekend for the first time and will be on hand for the Broncos' home game Saturday afternoon against San Diego State. It's the final game of the regular season.

"It's not too close and it's not too far (from home),'' he said. "I think what they do seems to fit me well, too.''

Cocke' said Seattle University, Idaho and San Jose State also offered Trent, who recently began to garner interest from Washington, Oregon State and Gonzaga as he put up big numbers (four games with 40-plus points).

"He's really come on as of late,'' Cocke' said. "He didn't play AAU the summer before his junior year because he was hurt, so he kind of flew under the radar until this year.''

Boise State has been aware of Trent since his sophomore year, as Cocke' has known Boise State assistant John Rillie since Rillie played at Tacoma Community College more than 20 years ago.

Last November, the Broncos signed Darnell Taylor (6-4, 190-pound guard from Saddleback College in California) and James Webb III (6-9, 190-pound wing from North Idaho College).
