Roger's fish rap: Heading into spring with my yays and boos

Published: March 7, 2013

Sure, it's goofy, but sometimes you have to be. After all, this isn't a life-or-death matter, it's just a fishing column. So here we go:

Yay! Those warm, sunny days are peeking through the clouds, which kicks my motivation into overdrive.

Boo! Wind seems to come up at the same time.

Yay! Spring steelhead fishing gives everybody a chance to catch a really big fish.

Boo! The run is smaller than usual, and I haven't been hearing many good reports.

Yay! Fish and Game is stocking local ponds and the Boise River with trout.

Boo! Some kid with a worm and a Spiderman fishing pole will probably out fish me and my expensive fly rod.

Yay! I heard reports of people catching smallmouth bass and catfish.

Boo! Not sure I can get deep enough with a fly to catch either of them right now.

Yay! More bugs are starting to hatch and bring trout to the surface.

Boo! I may have to dust off my 6X and 7X tippet and tie on tiny flies.

Yay! Road trips.

Boo! $3.50 a gallon gas after seeing it under $3 about a month ago.

Yay! Daylight savings time starts on Sunday, March 10, which gives us time for after-work fishing.

Boo! We still have to work.

Yay! River fishing for trout continues through March.

Boo! Until the snow starts melting and blows everything out.

Yay! The further we get into spring, the more places we have to fish.

Boo! There are still only two days in a weekend.
