Brothers pass on TV sharks' offer to invest in their Eagle eyewear business

Published: February 22, 2013

Brothers Taylor, Brooks and Tanner Dame wanted to make something different from the sunglasses sold by Oakley and other brands, so they founded Proof Eyewear to make eco-friendly glasses frames. They won an appearance on ABC's Shark Tank TV show to make a pitch for investments in the company.

Now we know: The brothers who founded an Eagle company to make eco-friendly eyewear didn’t receive the money they wanted from the sharks on ABC’s “Shark Tank.”

But it was not because the sharks — the wealthy investors who star on the reality show — disliked Proof Eyewear's wood-frame glasses. It’s because Brooks, Tanner and Taylor Dame rejected separate offers made by two of the sharks as inadequate.

Sharks Robert Herjavec and Kevin O’Leary each offered the $150,000 the brothers requested, but in return for 25 percent ownership of the company — not the 10 percent the brothers offered. The Dames said the sharks’ offers valued Proof at $600,000, less than it is worth.

The show aired Friday night in Boise on KIVI-TV (Channel 6). Afterward, the brothers told the station they were happy because of the national exposure their appearance brought to Proof.
