Meridian man arrested for exposing woman to HIV

Published: February 8, 2013

Richard Charles Deaver is being held in the Ada County Jail on a felony charge of transfer of the body fluid which may contain the HIV virus after Meridian Police say he had unprotected sex with a woman last winter and did not tell her he was HIV positive.

The woman contacted Meridian Police in May and told them she had sex with the 38-year-old Deaver several times between January and March before she found out from an acquaintance that Deaver had HIV. The woman also told police she asked Deaver before they had sex if he had any sexually transmitted diseases and he said he didn’t.

Police reports indicate the woman has been undergoing regular tests to see if she has contracted the HIV virus.

Police eventually turned over the results of their investigation to Ada County prosecutors, who issued an arrest warrant for Deaver July 20. By that time, Deaver had moved out of Meridian and police were having a hard time finding him.

Deaver was arrested in Gem County earlier this week during a traffic stop when officers determined he had the active arrest warrant for the HIV charge.

He was brought back to the Ada County Jail Thursday.

The crime of transfer of the body fluid which man contain the HIV virus is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
