Several food vendors from the Capital City Public Market will split off this spring and create a new food-centric market to better meet their customer’s needs, says founding board president Janie Burns of Meadowlark Farms. Burns was one of the founding members of the Capital City Market in 1994.
The Boise Farmers Market will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays starting April 6 on the north side of the Republic parking lot on 11th Street between Front and Grove streets [map]. The south side of the lot will be available for parking. The market also wants to partner with the Boise Bicycle Project for a bike corral, Burns said.
You’ll find produce grown within 200 miles of Boise and local specialty foods. Each vendor is required to have at least one product that contains one locally grown ingredient. For example, Cucina di Paolo lasagna will be made with local spinach.
The market will open with about 25 vendors - though growers with late-season produce will be coming on board later. The lineup includes Meadowlark Farms, Homestead Natural Foods, Triangle C Ranch, The Jelly Lady, Cucina di Paollo, Rice Family Farms and Malheur Meats.
There will be a few artisan products, but the focus is local, said Burns. Ideally the art would dovetail into the agricultural scene - local wool, spun into yarn and knitted into a sweater, or tempera paints from local eggs.
